Alex Kidd Ossale (アレックス・キッド・オサール Arekkusu Kiddo Osāru),[1] Alex (アレク Areku, "Alec" in Japan) for short, is a video game character created by Kotaro Hayashida whose popularity peaked during the late 1980s and who was the protagonist of both a series of video games released by Sega in their fictional universe, as well as in numerous spin-off merchandise. For a time he was an unofficial mascot of Sega, taking the title from Opa-Opa, before becoming overshadowed by the immensely popular Sonic the Hedgehog.

Appearance[]

Alex Kidd is a short boy with oversized ears, covering up over 1/3th of his head and brown sideburns trying to cover them, and ever so slight monkey-like features. He wears a trademark red and yellow jumpsuit, and has oversized hands that comically expand when punching. Sometimes he appeared as a teenager, although the only time his exact age has been stated, he was stated to be 14 years old. [citation needed] The manual from Alex Kidd in Miracle World states that his story happened centuries ago.

At a glance it's easy to see that the character of Alex Kidd may have been inspired chiefly by both Bruce Lee's iconic role as Billy Lo in the movie Game of Death and the character Sun Wukong from the novel Journey to the West (Alex being originally planned to use the Ruyi Jingu Bang instead of martial arts[2]).

History[]

Alex Kidd in Miracle World[]

Initially, in the original game, he is an orphan who lives alone on Mt. Eternal, on the planet Aries, where he has trained in the ancient Shellcore technique for seven years. This technique enables an Arian to shatter boulders with their bare fists.

After the disappearance of King Thunder, the planet Aries is thrown into chaos. An usurper, Janken the Great, kidnaps the next in line to the throne, Prince Igul, and his fiancée Princess Lora. Many of the citizens are turned to stone through Janken's magic. Alex learns about these events from a dying man and sets out to return peace to Radaxian. After he returning to his master, Saint Nurari, Alex learns that he is in fact a lost member of the Radaxian royal family, son of King Thunder and brother of Prince Igul. Alex sets out to discover the whereabouts of his father, rescue his brother, restore the kingdom, and destroy the monstrous minions of Janken. Numerous magical artifacts and medallions are needed to be discovered to progress in the story.

During the game, Alex can collect Baums, the currency on Aires, which can then be used to purchase extra lives, items, power-ups, and vehicles for Alex Kidd from shops at the start of several stages, such as the Sukopako Motorcycle, Suisui Boat, and the Pedicopter (a small pedal-powered helicopter).

After he defeats Janken The Great, Alex restores peace to Radaxian, and the people who were turned to stone by Janken are returned to normal. In the city, Igul is crowned King of Radaxian, and Alex Kidd, with his martial arts, takes the position of Defender of the City, although his next goal will be to find his father, King Thunder.

Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle[]

Some time later, Alex heared a rumor that his long lost father is alive and well on Janken's planet, Paperock. The Planet earned this name as it is inhabited by experts at the game "Rock, Paper, Scissors." Despite discouragement from his family, Alex travels to the Planet Paperock in hopes of finding his father.

Alex Kidd BMX Trial[]

Alex participates in a BMX trial, passing by several obstacle courses until he reaches Radaxian Castle.

Alex Kidd: The Lost Stars[]

In the arcade version, Alex and Stella go after the Miracle Balls.

In the Master System version, Alex realizes that the stars from planet Aries went missing, and goes to Mt. Eternal to see if he could discover why they disappeared. There, he finds an ancient wizard called Daleda reading an old, magical scroll. Daleda tells Alex that, over five thousand years ago, a mysterious evil creature called Ziggurat had stolen the same stars from Aries's sky. A noble prince by the name of Halifax kidd, Alex's ancestor, had journeyed beyond the realm of space and time to defeat Ziggurat and return the stars to the sky. But before Ziggurat fled, it vowed to someday return and finish what it had begun. Ziggurat had once again stolen Aries's stars, and to get them back, Alex would have to follow Halifax's steps into the unknown. Daleda assists him by opening a magic doorway to the stars.

Alex Kidd: High-Tech World[]

After Alex heard about a recently opened arcade called High-Tech World, he tries to find a map to the arcade and reach it before it closes.

Alex Kidd in Shinobi World[]

Alex is spending a lovely afternoon with his girlfriend on planet Shinobi. Suddenly, the sky becomes dark and a shady figure appears and kidnaps his girlfriend. Before he can do anything, another figure appears in front of Alex and explains what happened. The wicked Dark Ninja that he, the White Ninja, had banished ten thousand years ago has returned and kidnapped Alex's girlfriend in hopes of taking control of Miracle World. The White Ninja gave Alex his special ninja power so he can rescue his girlfriend and stop the Dark Ninja.
